Northwestern Koochiching County
Northwestern Koochiching County extends from the hamlet of Loman through the community of Birchdale and west to Clementson, Minnesota where the Rapid River empties into the Rainy River. The Rainy River defines the northernmost border of this picturesque area and offers sterling opportunities for the angler and sightseer alike. The area offers several accesses to the Rainy River with boat ramps at Loman and at four other locations as you travel west. The State of Minnesota offers services and casual access at the Manitou Rapids wayside rest and Franz Jevne State Park the most pristine mile on the Rainy River where camping and angling opportunities await.
The River Valley Development Association provides economic leadership and leads the area with novel celebrations and events. The entire area congregates in Birchdale to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day taking in “America’s Parade” followed by the “World’s Greatest Potluck.” The third Saturday in August brings “The North American Sturgeon Championship” to Nelson Park in Birchdale; winners take home more than $1,000 in cash winnings. You’re not a complete angler until you have experienced the oldest king of freshwater fish, for information call Nelson’s Fine Store at 218-634-2583. Other events include a robust “Oktoberfest” and “Pioneer Days” held in mid-July.
