I have been baking ever since I was 6 years old. I know that sounds crazy, but I seriously have! I come from a long line of amazing bakers and terrific cooks. My mom, when I was in kindergarten, had a home candy business out in Washington and I remember dreaming that when I was bigger, I would have a candy shop just like her. Fast forward 35 years and I am finally ready to live my dream after my husband came across this cute little 1950’s Valentine Diner just sitting out in a field 3 years ago. After a lot of sanding, scraping, painting, patching, blood, sweat and tears….we have created “Atom Bomb Diner Candy”. I always knew I needed a niche and this little diner is the perfect backdrop that sets me apart from the rest. My focus is to create items that were popular in the 50’s with my own crazy twist. I basically want to bring fun & delicious big town flavors to our small-town surrounding communities.
Location wise, I always have people ask me WHY do you have your shop all the way out in Loman? Why aren’t you in International Falls? My answer to that is why not be in Loman, fresh air and I can just walk out of my house and get right to work. I honestly feel no matter where I am, I will always have business as I am flexible and willing to deliver if people do not want or cannot make the trip.
Some challenges that I am facing right now are I just do not have enough time. I have been working a full time (40hr week) job the last 3 years, get home around 6pm and stay up baking/decorating until 1-2 am 4-5 days a week. All that will change the end of May as I am ready to get the ball rolling as a full-time baker! I will be able to offer more goods as I will have specialty donuts, fun chocolate bars, truffles, candied apples in addition to my cheesecakes, cupcakes, cake, and cookie pies.
My future plans are to make a portion of my property into a mini 1950’s village. We have the start of a mini gas station (just for show only, we will not be offering gas) and I plan to make a little movie theater…because why not, life is short, and I just want to bring a little piece of history back for even just a smile.
